How to use WhatToBuild MCP

Bring Order Radar into your AI workflow

WhatToBuild MCP lets you research software opportunities from the AI tool you already use. Ask your assistant to find websites with growing traffic, explore a market, uncover Google Trends demand signals, inspect a website's traffic history, or check your remaining research allowance.

It works with Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, WorkBuddy, Claude Desktop, and other MCP-compatible AI tools through the what-to-build-mcp npm package.

Before you start

You will need:

Connect your account

Open a terminal and run:

npx -y what-to-build-mcp --login

The command opens the WhatToBuild API key page. Create an API key, paste it into the terminal, and the connection will be verified. Your key is stored in your operating system's credential manager rather than in a project file.

You can check or remove the saved connection later:

npx -y what-to-build-mcp --status
npx -y what-to-build-mcp --logout

Add WhatToBuild to your AI tool

Add this MCP server configuration wherever your AI tool manages MCP servers. It starts the what-to-build-mcp npm package:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "what-to-build": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "what-to-build-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

For Codex CLI, run:

codex mcp add what-to-build -- npx -y what-to-build-mcp

Restart the AI tool or start a new conversation after saving the configuration.

What you can ask

Start with natural-language questions such as:

  • “Check WhatToBuild data freshness first. Tell me the latest rankable traffic month, when records for that month were created, and the newest website registration date in the database.”
  • “Confirm the latest available traffic month, then find tools and SaaS websites registered in the last 90 days and rank them by traffic growth.”
  • “Find SaaS websites registered from July 1 through July 31, 2026, and rank only that registration-date range by visits.”
  • “Find AI tool websites registered in July 2026. If July traffic rankings are not yet in the database, say so clearly instead of presenting an older month as July's ranking.”
  • “Find websites related to customer support software.”
  • “Find rising Google Trends signals related to AI coding tools, excluding puzzle terms.”
  • “Search Google Trends for emerging business and software keywords updated this week, then summarize the opportunities worth validating.”
  • “Show the traffic history for this WhatToBuild website ID.”
  • “How many WhatToBuild MCP queries do I have left today?”

Your AI tool can use these read-only capabilities:

  • Get data freshness — read the traffic snapshot months, their record timestamps, and the newest website registration date currently in the database. It does not predict future publication dates.
  • Find recently registered websites — filter by a registration-date range. When no range is specified, it uses the last 90 days and then ranks matches by visits or traffic growth.
  • Search websites — filter by payment gateway, date, traffic trend, website attributes, and fixed industry groups. It uses the newest available traffic snapshot by default.
  • Search Google Trends — find collected demand signals by keyword, trend type, value, classification, and update date. Blocked queries and puzzle-related terms are excluded by default.
  • Get website details — inspect a result's metadata and traffic history using its website ID.
  • Get usage — see your daily MCP allowance and remaining queries.

Use the results well

Order Radar is a research starting point, not an automatic business decision. Use the signals to form a hypothesis, then validate the customer problem, competitive landscape, pricing, distribution, and technical scope before committing to a product idea.

WhatToBuild enforces account access, membership entitlements, data permissions, and daily limits for every MCP request.
